In the beginning, there was not much to see of Christ's College: "A room in the immigrants' barracks, about twelve feet square, very roughly whitewashed, with a small table and a few wooden stools, as far as I remember, for its furniture, was the first College Lecture-room. A similar room of somewhat larger dimensions was allocated for the Grammar School" wrote Henry Jacobs, Headmaster 1850-1863.
