This week we see the start of all summer sport with volleyball, waterpolo and tennis having their first rounds of competition and all other sports having sessions on Wednesday.
On Saturday, 31 athletes competed at Rawhiti in the weekly interclub athletics event. There were three outstanding performances. Sam Bennetts achieved 3.5m height in Pole Vault and was placed 2nd, Sam King won the Open 200m and Kaveni Balenacagi won the U20 shotput with a put of 14.72kg.
In other events Marcus Hamilton won the U14 shot put, Rory Baker was 1st in U18 triple jump, Alfie Baker won U16 javelin and Cody House was 1st in U18 long jump. College athletes also achieved 11 second and thirds.
The success of our top College tennis players over the summer was recently reported and last week the Senior A team began their interschool competition. In a qualifying tournament for the South Island champs, the team have won the Canterbury Schools team title. Over the last week the team have had wins over St Bedes, Shirley BHS, Burnside and a very good 5-1 win over CBHS. The team will now be top seed at the South Island champs in a couple of weeks time, with the top two teams making it through to the National finals.
The College cricket club is well underway and all teams have completed two matches to date. On Saturday the top three sides finished their second two day match. The 1st XI won their second match outright when they defeated North-West cricket while Logan Stapylton-Smith scored 119 not out for the 2nd XI in their win over St Thomas 1st XI. In the other match, the Development team drew their match with St Andrew's 3rd XI. Tom Macfarlane scored 103 not out for the 4th XI in their win over Shirley BHS and Jack Belcher scored 134 not out for the Year 9B side in their win over St Thomas. There were also wins for the Colts, Year 9 Black, Year 9 White and senior T20 side.
Congratulations to all who were involved in yesterdays swimming and athletic events. Athletic heats continue this week, as we build to next week’s Athletic Sports. A reminder that on Wednesday all boys are expected to be attending their summer sport for the term.
