Round Square visits Christchurch Hebrew Centre
Fifteen College boys, all members of the Round Square Committee, took a look inside the impressive Christchurch Hebrew Centre last week, and learnt a lot about Judaism from Old Boy Asher Etherington.
The visit, organised by Claude Tellick as part of the Round Square committee’s aim to celebrate the diversity of cultures and beliefs in Christchurch, included Chaplain Bosco Peters, International Manager Paul McCarthy, and Round Square representative for Christ’s College Rob Donaldson.
In the hour he spent with the group Asher Etherington shared some fascinating information about Judaism, worship in the synagogue, and the Jewish community in New Zealand. The boys saw the synagogue’s Torah, a hand-inscribed goatskin scroll of the first five books of the Old Testament, and were impressed by the beauty of the building.
