New friends the winners on quiz night
A ‘meet and greet’ quiz night has brought together Christchurch’s international students for a fun-filled challenge, along with a great opportunity to make new friends.
Hosted by St Margaret’s College, 80 students from four local secondary schools – Christ’s College, St Margaret’s College, Rangi Ruru Girls’ School and St Andrew’s College – combined in mixed teams to tackle the quiz questions.
For College Year 12 student Kosuke Hashimoto, it was an ideal opportunity to see old friends, make new ones and tackle a “quite difficult” quiz featuring 80 questions that really tested the knowledge of the Years 9–13 students.
“It was great being able to chat to other international students as we debated questions to find the right answer and get to know each other,” Kosuke says. “There were students from my home, Japan, along with China, Vietnam and South Korea. There were also Kiwi students from international backgrounds, so it was a real international get-together.”
With 20 College students spread across 10 teams, the boys also expanded their local and international knowledge, covering everything from song mash-ups – with the students having to identify all the songs – to New Zealand wildlife, flags and sport.
“I really enjoyed the questions, especially the sports ones, and the questions relating to a famous person featured on the Google main page each day,” Kosuke says.
“The questions were compiled by a university quizmaster and were definitely not too easy. The whole two hours had a good feel and there was plenty of fun and snacks, with a Christ’s College student in the winning team. However, we all learnt a lot.”
