03 Jul 2020

Following a season cut short by Covid-19 and lockdown and the cancellation of many regional, South Island and national secondary school events, College still achieved some outstanding results. Notable performances and service commitments to summer sport were highlighted at assembly this week with the presentation of summer sport Colours.

First up were Moe Gath, Ben Cornell and Isaac Aitken who have been members of the College Senior A water polo team for the last four seasons, during which time the Senior team has won the Canterbury and South Island school titles in 2017 and was 2nd in both competitions in 2019.

James Currie, the current senior swimming champion, who this year created five new school records, also earlier this year claimed six Canterbury long course titles in breaststroke, freestyle and individual medley.

The Senior A tennis squad of Liam Adams, Jenner Johnson, Nick Schneideman and Nant Prachuabmoh was unbeaten in the Canterbury mid-week competition, and defended its title for the fourth year in a row when they defeated the College #2 side in the South Island Secondary Schools’ championship.

In cricket, Thomas McClean was awarded Colours as captain of the 1st XI squad. A member of the team since Year 11, he has played more than 50 matches in two day, one day and T20 formats, amassing over 800 runs and taking 66 wickets.

Athletics’ Colours went to Charlie Cameron, John Wells, Matt Durant, Alfie Baker, Sam Idiens, Robbie McKeown and Kyle Houston. Charlie Cameron is ranked #1 in New Zealand at the U18 level for pole vault, and is the U16 Canterbury record holder.

John Wells is the 2020 College senior athletic champion and has been a member of the Canterbury U18 team for the last two years competing in the national club championships.

Matt Durant is one of College’s athletic captains for 2020 and has had success in the 400m and relay teams at Canterbury and South Island school events.

Sam Idiens is the current College Intermediate athletic champion and in 2019 was named the most outstanding junior athlete by Canterbury athletics after breaking the U15 3000m record at the Canterbury school championships.

Alfie Baker, talented in javelin, triple jump and high jump, has been a member of the Canterbury athletics team for four years, and has been the South Island school high jump champion for three years running.

Kyle Houston has represented College at regional, South Island and national level, last year winning the Intermediate 3000m event at the Canterbury school championships.

In 2019 Robbie McKeown was 2nd in the 300m hurdles at the Canterbury school championships and 3rd at South Island’s. He was also a member of the College 4x400m team which won the Canterbury school title.

Polo players Edward Davidson and Winston Hutchinson were awarded their Colours, both having been members of the polo A team for several seasons, helping the team win both Canterbury and South Island titles. Both are 0 handicap players who spend time coaching the junior members of the club.

Covid-19 cancelled the Maadi Cup regatta but just prior, College’s rowing eight had claimed the South Island title for the first time since 2016. The College eight to receive their Colours were Archie Batchelor, Thomas McEwan, Tom Tothill, Johnny Lee, Liam Alexander, Guy Chaffey, Dominic Edmond, Louie Bethell and Henry Mossman.
