Poroporo planting at Kennedy’s Bush
24 Oct 2017
Mr Bell’s Year 9 Biology class rolled up their sleeves on Thursday 19 October and helped the Christchurch City Council’s “Poroporo for the Port Hills” project. This project was set up in response to the devastating fire that removed hectares of the native plants earlier in the year. College was among several Christchurch schools that were sent poroporo seed pods from which we germinated and grew some seedlings. These were taken by the class and planted out in an area at the top of Kennedy’s Bush Track. The hope is that they will grow and form a fire resistant boundary to slow any future fires and also act as nursery trees for other natives.
