Open your heart

27 Feb 2020

Some very special guests helped celebrate Ash Wednesday at College, with Bishop Peter Carrell, the Rev. Margaret Sentamu and the Archbishop of York John Sentamu joining Chaplain Bosco Peters at the service on 26 February.

Referencing the reading (Matthew 6:1–6,16–21) in his sermon, Archbishop John spoke about faith as a personal journey – and how if you open your heart God will be “with you” every step of the way.

“Be authentic, be yourself, because God knows you better than you think. Create the habits of the heart where you can be compassionate, kind, loving and giving. Check: how real am I? How caring am I? How can I make a difference? If you open your heart and allow God to be with you, you will be truly transformed.”

Archbishop John and his wife Margaret have been visiting the Pacific and New Zealand before his retirement in June. Although stepping down from the second most senior role in the Church of England, John, with Margaret by his side, will no doubt move on to other forms of ministry and other roles.
