Managing our carbon footprint

20 Nov 2018

College's carbon footprint has long been on the mind of HoD Biology Graeme Swanson and Director of Finance and Operations Steve Kelsen. Over the past 12 months they have started to see the dream of carbon reduction at College become a reality, by gathering together a group of keen staff and students who have set up a carbon initiative to sit alongside the work of the environment committee. During Term 4 the policy was presented and accepted by the Board, allowing the project to begin.

Setting targets

In order to understand exactly where we are at, Energy Manager Simon Ross of Economech Analytics came to assess College's current energy usage and present a report to the carbon committee. With a higher than average energy usage for schools in New Zealand, we now have a base level to set targets and get real results.

What this means for the boys

In its initial stages, the carbon initiative has been mainly staff-led, with the aim for the boys to become more involved as the project develops and becomes more hands-on. Graeme says he hopes the boys will take up the opportunity to get on board, as not only will they be able to earn NZQA credits, but they will also be part of a significant change at College now and for the future.

Just the beginning
