Great day for a park run

22 May 2017

With the green expanse and mature woodlands of Hagley Park right on our doorstep, it is no wonder cross country is an integral part of College athletics. At the 2017 cross country – held Monday 8 May, on a bright but chilly autumnal afternoon – a large and enthusiastic cohort of runners, both students and staff, gave it their all.

MIC Athletics Graeme Christey puts a lot of thought into planning and setting out the courses. U14 and junior competitors run 3km, intermediate runners 4km, and senior athletes take on a 5km race. “There’s always a great atmosphere around the course, with the boys encouraging each other and enjoying plenty of support from spectators,” says Graeme. “It makes it all worthwhile, seeing the majority of boys give it a genuine go and challenging themselves to get round the course as fast as they can.”

Such an event could not take place without a large army of helpers, and Graeme appreciates the huge support of the gap students and his colleagues, who all play a big part in the cross country’s success.
