Good vibes in the pool

There were belly flops and splashes, “tidal” surges and puddles, but there were also smooth and masterful strokes, cutting through the water, races won and records set, cheers, applause and plenty of House spirit on display, at another successful College swimming sports.

One of the highlights of the start of the new school year, the swimming sports are a great way for the boys to have fun, compete for their Houses, and cool off on a hot summer afternoon.

Taking the plunge at his first College event, Year 9 student Daniel Bridgman soon showed his form – winning all his U14 grade races and setting new College records in the 100m individual medley, 50m breaststroke, 50m and 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke. Daniel is a keen swimmer, a member of the JASI Swim Club, and enjoys the charged atmosphere of swim meets and the challenge of racing. His favourite event is the 50m butterfly. “It’s a good sport, you soon get fit when you’re swimming – and swimming competitions are a lot of fun. It’s pretty cool.”

While Daniel is clearly one to watch, other swimmers also set new College records. Year 11 students James Currie and Bradley Shearer set new Intermediate records, James in the 200m individual medley and 100m breaststroke, and Bradley in the 100m and 200m freestyle. In the Senior Championship, Louis Clark set new records in the 200m individual medley and 200m freestyle. And the Corfe junior team set a new record in the Medley Relay Cup competition.
