Christ’s College choirs won a number of awards at the Big Sing regional competition held at The Piano on Monday 19 June.

College’s commissioned waiata, "Te Whakapono Ki Te Atua", won an award for the Most Outstanding Performance of a Composition involving Maori text. The choir’s performance of "Verleih’ uns Frieden" received an award for an Outstanding Performance of a Romantic Era Work and the Chapel Choir won the Outstanding Performance by a Male Voice Choir award.

The Big Sing is a national competition organised by the NZ Choral Federation involving more than 400 choirs. The Chapel Choir has been selected to compete in the National Finale, which will be held in Auckland from Thursday 24 to Saturday 26 August.

On the evening of Monday 19 June, College performed two pieces at a Gala Concert held at St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. Director of Music, Robert Aburn, says he has been receiving plenty of positive comments about the waiata.

“I am really pleased that the boys took full ownership of the piece as we worked to layer harmonies and bring meaning to the text. The singing was enhanced by appropriate Kapa Haka gestures.’’
