Aliens among us

Located in the remote Nevada desert, the purpose of top secret US airforce base, commonly known as Area 51, has long been a source of fascination for conspiracy theorists and people intrigued by the possibility of extraterrestrial life ...

With the tag “Let’s see them aliens”, what started as a Facebook joke – “Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us” – has captured the imagination of millions and, in the next few days, the area may have to cope with a massive influx of visitors.

Taking this theme and running with it, the motion “This House would storm Area 51” proved a topical and highly entertaining subject for the 12th annual Christ’s College–St Margaret’s College debate. Year 13 SMC students Sujean In, Sarah Cosgrove and Lydia Munro presented a spirited argument affirming the motion, while Year 12 students Jamie Yee and John-Paul Lay and Year 13 student Ellie Stevenson offered a strong rebuttal. It came down to the wire, but in the end adjudicator Meg Longley gave College the win – and at least for now Area 51 should be safe from intruders from Down Under.
