The Clarence: People and Places of Waiau Toa
Old Boy Tim Fulton’s (11109) latest book, The Clarence: People and Places of Waiau Toa, captures the contemporary story of rural life in New Zealand while also honouring the powerful traditions of the heartland.
Featuring stunning landscape photographs, The Clarence – People and Places of Waiau Toa, follows the route of the Clarence River, coursing through the hinterland amid the valleys and ranges. It shares the stories of the people who have worked the land – the near misses, incredible achievements, and resilience in wild places.
“Personally, it’s hugely satisfying to have recounted memories of so many people born and raised in the Clarence – and those who have come to love it,” Tim says.
Told in four parts over 250 pages – and complemented by an array of fascinating and powerful historical and contemporary images – The Clarence – People and Places of Waiau Toa reveals stories that stretch from the Southern Alps to the Pacific.
Inspired by the story of a sheep muster on Molesworth Station in the 1930s – passed on by a family friend, the late Jim Rossiter – the story of the Clarence weaves its way through history and culture through the memories of generations of rural New Zealanders.
Tim, who grew up on a sheep and crop farm in Swannanoa, near Christchurch, has written extensively on rural life during his time as a journalist and author. His books include a family memoir, Straight off the Tussock, and a Kiwi Farmers’ Guide to Life.
