Helping College students to find their career pathways
Year 11 students have been ‘finding their pathways’, supported by Old Boys sharing their career journeys, and several businesses and tertiary institutions opening their doors to the boys.
A College initiative, the Finding Your Pathway programme inspires students to start to consider their post-school plans.
Major Michael Michael Lawry and Sapper Hamish Newstead are among those Old Boys who have returned to Christ’s College to share their personal pathways.
For Michael, a Harper House Old Boy, it is an opportunity to detail his national and international experiences and adventures in the New Zealand Army, along with the options to study overseas. Meanwhile, recent Julius House Old Boy Hamish Newstead – a leader during his days at school – has also talked about his army opportunities, illustrating the importance of leading by example.
Old Boys Sam Chappell, Dominic Edmond, Louis Gunn, Oliver Hickman, Will Lovell, Angus Mossman, and Max Summerfield have also shared their career journeys, urging the boys to consider all options and make the most of their opportunities. They have undertaken varied careers, including marketing, medicine, sports management, property development, accountancy, law, and plumbing. All have given their time to help the boys start to consider their own career options.
During varied site visits, the boys have learnt more about both the Ara city and trades campuses and tried out the sports facilities and investigated viticulture at Lincoln University. They have also delivered problem-solving presentations in the entrepreneurship field. During their time at Ara, the students have worked on a podcast at the New Zealand Broadcasting School, undertaken a commerce quiz on the new stadium, and sampled engineering and sports science options. They have also heard from Old Boy – and investor – Mike Percasky during a visit to his innovative Riverside Market, toured the New Zealand Merino Company and learnt about the successful business, and gone behind the scenes and onto the showroom floor at Archibalds.
Julius Housemaster Dr Mike Field, who will be taking on a school leadership role in Nairobi, Kenya next year, has wrapped up the programme with his keynote address, urging the boys to follow their passions as they make their way in the world.
