Celebrating cultural diversity at Christ’s College

Head of International and Round Square Benson Geng-Wang and St Margaret's College Head of Global Relations Yibin Kim – alongside their respective committees – have hosted a vibrant Cultural Festival at Christ’s College.
More than 110 students from Christ’s College, St Margaret’s College, and Rangi Ruru Girls’ School have gathered in the Chapman Room to celebrate cultural diversity through performances.
“It was a great opportunity to showcase some of the cultural diversity in Christchurch to our students,” Benson says. “It was also promising to see so many student performers step up and share their talents.”
The evening began with an interactive activity among the tables, where “students arranged cards in order from the most zoomed out to the most zoomed in”. This was followed by a series of engaging performances, including a traditional Malaysian dance, energetic West African drumming, and a Bulgarian folk dance, wrapped up with a lively Chinese lion dance.
During the break, a food stall provided a selection of snacks, such as pocky sticks, ramen, and drinks, with all proceeds going to charity.
“Tonight was a true celebration of cultural diversity, talent, and connection,” Yibin says. “It was great seeing so many students come together to share their heritage through music and support one another. We hope to build a stronger sense of community and appreciation for cultural diversity in both Christ’s College and St Margaret’s College.”
The second half of the night showcased student talent from all three schools, with nine students performing in various ways, singing in different languages, playing traditional instruments – such as the Guqin – and performing K-pop dance mashups.
“The night wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of the Round Square committee members, the Global Relations Council, and the administrative support from College International Student Manager & Round Square Representative Mrs Sarah Davidson,” Benson notes.
“The event was a true celebration of cultural expression, highlighting the diverse talents and backgrounds of the schools’ communities.”
