Winter Tournament Week Wrap

02 Sep 2025

Winter Tournament Week is always one of the biggest events on the calendar — and our College teams didn’t disappoint. There was plenty of drama with big wins, tight losses, and one very special national title.

The real headline of the week came from the Junior XI footballers. They went on an incredible unbeaten run — knocking over Southland Boys’ High School (BHS), St Bede’s College, Marlborough BHS, and Otago BHS in the final — to be crowned champions. An amazing achievement for the team and one that will be remembered for a long time. The 1st XI were a little unlucky, with a string of tight results not falling their way, but they kept competing with heart right through to the end despite some tired and sore bodies.

On the basketball courts, the Senior A boys came out firing, racking up huge wins over Lincoln High School, Cashmere High School and Waitaki BHS. A nail-biting quarter-final against Shirley BHS went right down to the wire, but they bounced back in style to finish a very impressive 5th overall, qualifying for nationals to be held in the upcoming school holidays. The Senior B side showed plenty of fight too, coming through with gutsy wins over John Paul II High School and Papanui High School, while the Junior A boys battled hard all week to finish 10th. In the local competition The U20 White team won U20 Men's Division II.

In hockey, the 1st XI took on some of the country’s best in their national tournament. They had a highlight 5–1 win over Shirley BHS, followed by back-to-back victories against Rongotai College and Cambridge High School. The boys finished 25th overall, rounding out their week on a winning note. In the local competition, the Junior XI won the Boys Division 3 competition.

On the rugby fields, the 1st XV continued their strong season with wins over King’s College and St Paul’s Collegiate, while the U15s finished their week on a high, defeating Waitaki BHS 68–0 to secure 7th place. The U16s also fought hard in their quad, with three narrow losses that could easily have gone the other way. In the regular season, the Year 9 Ravens beat the College Tuis in the final while the Development Black XV beat CBHS in their final.

It was a massive week of competition, travel, and representing College with pride. Congratulations to all of our boys for the way they played and carried themselves — and once again, a special shoutout to the Junior XI footballers. Our thanks to for all who helped make the week such a great success.
