Winter Tournament Week – it’s a wrap
08 Sep 2026
What a week! Well done to all the players, coaches, managers, and sideline supporters who lined up for Winter Tournament Week across New Zealand.
Exemplifying the character of Christ’s College, the boys showed teamwork, resilience, and commitment in all their games, celebrating the wins with humility and accepting their losses with grace.
Congratulations to our basketball, football, hockey, and rugby teams on their sportsmanship and fair play after wrapping up another busy season. Our badminton players also stepped up at the Canterbury Championships, with Years 9–10 runner-up Ethan Shen and Will Murahidy, winner of the Years 9–10 B Grade singles, in fine form.
The U16 rugby team was very impressive, finishing runner-up after beating Timaru Boys’ High School, 47–7, and St Andrew's College, 38–24, before a loss to Nelson College in the Quad Tournament. Meanwhile, the U15 side secured 5th spot in the Bowl Final after beating King’s College, 17–13, Waitaki Boys’ High School, 41–22, Shirley Boys’ High School, 33–18, and Timaru Boys' High School, 35–19. The 1st XV had mixed fortunes, with a loss to St Paul’s Collegiate School, 12–36, and a draw with King’s College, 38–38.
In hockey, the 1st XI finished the premier Rankin Cup as the top South Island school, securing 8th overall after narrowly missing out on a semi-final spot following a loss to New Plymouth Boys’ High School, 0–2, in the quarter-final. The 1st XI had topped its pool after beating Timaru Boys’ High School, 2–1, drawing with Auckland Grammar, 1–1, and beating Wellington College, 1–0. College then secured its quarter-final place after holding off St Bede’s College in a shootout. Meanwhile, the 2nd XI had a strong week, winning four of its five matches. The team finished the week with a 4–1 win against Lincoln High School to finish 5th at the Coaches Cup tournament.
In football, the 1st XI grabbed wins in Nelson over Motueka, 1–0, Buller, 10–0, with Yul Kwon snaring a hat trick; St Bernard’s College, 6–0, and Rangiora High School, 7–0, to claim 6th. Meanwhile, the Junior XI has had a mixed week, with one win, a draw, and several losses.
In basketball, Junior A took 4th spot after a close loss in the South Island semi-final to Otago Boys’ High School, 87–92, in Christchurch. Senior A finished 7th in the South Island Secondary Schools Tournament in Christchurch and Senior Development 6th.
