Victory again – by a single point
For the second time in a row College pipped Christchurch Boys’ High School at the post to win the much-anticipated annual 1st XV rugby match.
Played in brilliant conditions at Straven Road on Thursday 3 June, the game saw College own the first half, their skill and pinpoint accuracy piling on the points for an 18–10 lead at half-time. After a spirited haka from both schools, Boys’ High charged into the second half for an immediate try and conversion to narrow the lead.
The score seesawed throughout the half as both teams fought an exceptionally even game, capitalising on mistakes by the opposition, maintaining composure throughout, and producing some exciting rugby for the big crowd of parents, Old Boys and supporters.
But in the end, it was College who snatched victory for a 35–34 win, reminding everyone of the 28–27 victory it achieved a year earlier in 2020.
It was the 138th time the two schools had squared off against each other. Boys’ High has won 84 times, College 45 and there have been nine draws.
College captain Johnny Lee was named Player of the Day, and Callum Summerfield was amazing in his accuracy, kicking a total of three penalties and three conversions. Angus Hammett scored two tries and Johnny Lee and Sean Rutherford-Bradford scored one each.
