Te Wiki o te Reo Māori at Christ’s College

The power of the haka reverberates around Williams Court as House pride takes centre stage at Christ’s College. Each year, each House vies for ‘best haka’ honours as the tamaiti tāne (boys) unite for the traditional display of House tuakiri (identity) and mana.
This year, Condell’s House has outperformed all others to be named House Haka Champion, with Corfe House 2nd, and Somes House 3rd.
Judges Matua Te Huaki Puanaki and Matua Wiremu Puanaki have praised the performances and considerable improvements from previous years.
Matua Wiremu points out that in the five years he has been a judge, the House haka competition has improved every year to the point where this year’s contest is a clear and significant step up from his first time in the judge’s chair.
The House Haka is just one element of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Te Reo Māori Language Week) at Christ’s College. Boys have also been encouraged to use te reo, with opportunities to share their language skills among fellow ākonga (students) during the morning break and at the school gates. And parāoa parai (fried bread) has also been enjoyed by the boys.
Across the week, students have united under the theme Ake, Ake, Ake – a Forever Language to learn more and celebrate te reo.
