National stage for choral scholar Marcello Ferguson
College choral scholar Marcello Ferguson has won a place in the New Zealand Secondary Students’ Choir for 2025–2026.
The Year 11 baritone finds “singing empowering”, adding that it is the “only way to express words, no matter how distressing the message may be”.
Marcello, 16, is “super excited to join the choir because it offers an extension opportunity” as he looks forward to “further developing my voice in a different way”.
“Despite being the head treble of the Chapel Choir, I will be singing baritone in the national choir,” he explains. “The national choir offers several opportunities to sing all around the country, including at The Big Sing in 2026. The national choir will also undertake an international tour in late 2026, which will give us the opportunity to take New Zealand music aboard, like the College Music Tour to Europe this year.”
Marcello, who plays the piano and the trumpet, initially found his voice with the Cathedral Choir and also sang during his time at The Cathedral Grammar School.
Founded in 1986, the New Zealand Secondary Students’ Choir for singers aged 13–18 nurtures young voices to their full potential and empower teenagers through the celebration of choral music, supported by a commitment to excellence and creativity.
