Medal haul for College rowers

15 Mar 2022

College has claimed eight medals at the South Island Secondary School Rowing Championships at Lake Ruataniwha near Twizel.

Overall, more than 1000 rowers from schools around the South Island competed over three days at the eerily empty venue at the weekend, with only competitors allowed for their event under the Covid-19-enforced conditions.

College’s U15 coxed octuple sculls – Max Airey (stroke), James Hadden, Sam Hales, George Matthews, George Wilson, Geordie Pavey, Che de Luca, Angus Wallis, and Daniel Wilson (cox) – snared gold. Equally impressive, a further two College U15 eights secured places in the final.

College won silver in the U15 coxed eight, U16 coxed eight, U17 coxed eight, and the U18 coxed eight. In the U18 final, College crews also finished fourth and fifth, along with claiming bronze in the U17 coxed eight. Delivering strong performances, both the College U18 and U17 coxed fours won silver.
