College defends shield, takes 1st XI cricket title
College has won the Two-Day Cup Competition following a draw in the annual 1st XI cricket fixture against Christchurch Boys’ High School (CBHS).
In the culmination of the first half of the season, the 1st XI played the traditional end of Term 1 match at home. Unfortunately, the first day was washed out but a longer day’s play was agreed for the second day, with both the competition title and the Heathcote Williams Shield on the line.
College won the toss and, after CBHS forfeited its first innings, the home side batted quickly to get ahead of the game, with College declaring on 98/3 in the 14th over. CBHS then batted steadily to lunch, reaching the College total – also three wickets down – just after. CBHS upped the run rate in the middle session, setting College 197 for the outright win in about 40 overs. In the final innings, College chased hard, with several players batting well at a fast rate. While College could not seal the win – defending for the final overs – the team drew the match to win the title and retain the shield. Ollie Shore, Matt Lewis and Tim Seeto all scored in the 40s, with Ollie also grabbing four wickets.
