Circle of Christ’s College unity to oppose racism

Christ’s College students have formed a ‘circle of unity’ around the Quad in recognition of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Organised by the Senior Round Square committee, the circle of unity shows that everyone has a part to play in raising awareness of racism and highlighting the importance of eliminating racial discrimination as a whole.
The boys have also sung the Ka Waiata, and performed the school haka.
The circle is also symbolic of Round Square, an international network of schools across more than 50 countries that aims to embrace the IDEALS of Round Square – Internationalism, Democracy, Environment, Adventure, Leadership, and Service.
Round Square committee member Yul Kwon has told a College Assembly: “I understand that some of you may be thinking that this circle of unity does not mean anything to you and yes, you may not be directly affected by racial discrimination, but think about your peers. Your friends and family. The people you hold close to you. How would you feel if they were discriminated against?”
“Every single one of you in this room, from the staff to the boys, can do something to fight against racism. As a College community, we will take this next step in delivering our commitment to combating racism.”
Head of International and Round Square Benson Geng-Wang describes the circle of unity as “a milestone moment for Christ’s College”, emphasising the importance of students and staff embracing each other’s cultures.
“The circle of unity brings everyone together. We demonstrate this unity by singing the Ka Waiata, followed by performing a powerful haka to show unison,” he says.
Medbury School Head Boy Will Fang and Cultural Leader William McGlashan have recently visited College to meet Benson and International Student Manager/Round Square Representative Sarah Davidson. Inspired by the idea of the circle of unity, Medbury has established its own circle to acknowledge the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
