Christ’s College Spring Carnival – best of House pride
12 Sep 2025
A sea of House colours has flooded the Quad and Upper as students have celebrated 175 years of Christ’s College with an event-jammed Spring Carnival Week.
From a rousing haka at the opening ceremony to a battle of the bands and a parade of Houses, all the fun of interactive games, a boisterous tug of war, a dress-up day, competitions, and the naming of the 2026 Prefects, there has been much to celebrate.

While the Best House title has been awarded to School House, each student has embraced the carnival atmosphere and the opportunity to show their House pride. Organised by senior students, the opening ceremony has captured the imagination of the boys, with Richards unfurling the best flag.
A pavement art competition – ruled by Julius – has then drawn the boys to the Quad, which has also set the stage for the battle of the bands, won by Blue Bin.
Meanwhile, the Prefects versus staff game of Ki o Rahi has proved to be popular, along with an academic quiz in the Chapman Room won by Somes.
One of the most popular events – the haka competition dominated by Corfe – has united each House in superb conditions in Williams Court, before the boys have streamed onto Upper and into the Old Gym to challenge themselves on a mechanical bull or surfboard, in a gladiator duel, along an obstacle course, or in a ‘battle-axe’ throw-off.

In a tough tug of war, Julius, Rolleston, and Flower’s have set the standard, while Harper and Rolleston have been declared the Esports champions.
A colourful dress-up parade has packed out the Quad, with School named the best-dressed House and the Reverend Canon Cameron Pickering also starring in his full Morris dance glory. Student-created House videos have also been on display and the boys have relished food and ice creams on Upham. School has again showcased its creative heart, lifting the ad award for its ‘candid’ display of House life.
On the final day, the Prefects versus staff basketball game has moved all the action to Upper West before the closing ceremony and the announcement of the 2026 Prefects have signalled the end of Spring Carnival Week.
The feats of individual champions Jacob Gore (mechanical bull), Archie McCone (mechanical surfboard), and Leo Falloon (battle axe throw) have also been lauded.
Head Prefect Ihaka Cate says the week was an absolute success.
“It’s been so awesome to see the boys interact with not only the many cool events, but with each other. A lot of work was put into making the week amazing, and I think we’ve exceeded our expectations.”
Deputy Head Prefect Aaron Kwak echoes those views.
“We’ve been planning this for months, and it’s been so satisfying to see that our efforts have paid off. Both students and staff have taken up the festive theme, and the action-packed week. Along with the advent of spring (and consequently sunny weather), it’s uplifted the entire mood and energy of the school. Thanks to everyone for their enthusiastic involvement.”
