Sportsmanship and friendship

01 Mar 2018

A large and happy crowd of boys, teachers and parents gathered on Upper to enjoy the spectacle of Athletics Day 2018, held on Friday 23 February.

With so many track and field events to get through, it is impossible to hold every event on the one day. Therefore, in the weeks leading up to Athletics Day, many boys had already been put through their paces, taking part in heats and some finals for their chosen activities. For those boys who made it through to the events held on Athletics Day, they also had to cope with the pressure of performing at their best in front of a crowd.

Athletics Day is the first big community event in the College year. It is always a great event, with lots of participation from the boys and support from their parents. This year was no exception. The day had a great atmosphere and was a wonderful way to welcome new students and families to the College community.

Along with the competitive track and field events, non-championship events and the friendly rivalry of the House competition are also integral parts of Athletics Day. Yes, every boy who enters wants to gain points for his House, but they all cheer, support and encourage each other ... with the spirit of sportsmanship and friendship the number one winner on the day.

Fortunately, the field had suffered no serious after-effects following the drenching it received when the tail end of Cyclone Gita swept through Christchurch earlier in the week – but as conditions underfoot were still damp, some times were slower than they otherwise might have been.
