Racing in perfect conditions – “no wind, not too hot, nice and cool” – Year 10 student Art Aitken managed to pull ahead of the pack to win the male U14 individual race at the Canterbury secondary schools duathlon held at Ruapuna Speedway on Sunday 26 July.

As well as taking the gold medal in the U14 race, Art came 3rd overall across the U16 and U19 age groups.

Art has been competing in triathlons and duathlons for several years and loves the challenge of multisport events. He trains most days, swimming in the morning before school and running or cycling after school and at the weekend.

“It’s a lot more demanding and you have to do a lot more training when you’re into multisport, but I’ve been doing it so long it’s become second nature.”

Art has chosen cycling for his winter sport at College, as it dovetails nicely with his multisport training and “it’s good fun.”
