With “not much to do” while he was visiting family in China over the summer break, Year 11 student Bruce Chen decided to enter the Immerse Education Essay Competition. It was definitely time well spent, as his essay on the topic “Is the UN an effective body?” has secured him a place at the Immerse Cambridge Summer School in England in August.
“There were a lot of different topics to choose from and I could have easily selected something else, but in the end I preferred the essay topic on the theme of international relations, which is one of my many interests.”
Focusing mainly on the work of the UN Security Council, which, under the UN Charter, has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, Bruce presented a carefully researched and cogent essay to support his case. “I chose to argue that the UN is ineffective.”
Now, Bruce is eagerly looking ahead to his opportunity to immerse himself in university life in Cambridge. Along with academic sessions and tutorials, the summer school programme includes trips to Oxford and London, the chance to experience that quintessentially Cambridge pastime of punting on the River Cam, and a host of other activities. It will be a full-on trip.
“I’m very excited. It’ll be my first time in Europe and I’ve always wanted to see the UK and its world-class universities. It’ll be really good to live on campus, see its history, its libraries and facilities, and I’m looking forward to meeting like-minded people from all over the world.”
