Weekend warriors on duty – and opportunities
28 Oct 2026
For Lance Corporal Logan Quigley (14876), 24, and Private Barnaby Stanton (15502), 20, being ‘weekend warriors’ is all about seizing opportunities.
The Old Boys have returned to Christ’s College to talk about their Army Reserve Force adventures during a Career Convos session.
Both Barnaby, a Rolleston House member from 2019–2023, and Logan, a Richards House boarder from 2015–2019, value the roles for their wide-ranging exposure to different experiences, people from all walks of life, and opportunities to develop their leadership skills.
The combat drivers can now drive “almost anything”, including utility vehicles that can traverse all terrains. A part-time role in the Army Reserve Force also can lead to a full-time career or weekend opportunities to relish a challenging but rewarding way of life.
Both can be called into action to support regular forces, international and domestic disaster relief, domestic civil service, operational deployments in Antarctica, international peacekeeping and training, combat operations, and much more.
Logan and Barnaby have also navigated degrees at the University of Canterbury, with the former gaining a Bachelor of Criminal Justice and a Master of Criminal Justice. Meanwhile, Barnaby has gained a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Finance.
After nearly two years in the Reservists, Barnaby plans to move into a full-time Defence Force role, having enjoyed his training, in-the-field experiences, and teamwork.
“Just go get it and try anything,” he says. “If an opportunity presents itself in the Defence Force, just smile and put your hand up.”
After nearly five years in the Reservists, Logan wants to gain more “life experiences and see where they take me”.
“I have loved being able to throw myself into different situations, and will continue as a Reservist before considering a career with the New Zealand Police further down the road,” he says.
Both believe their army roles will benefit their future career choices, boosted by the leadership opportunities and chance to work in a diverse environment. They also appreciate their time at Christ’s College, acknowledging “the routines, expectations, and traditions have prepared us well for our introduction to the Army Reserve Force”.
