Solomon Islands PM returns to College

23 Jun 2026

During his first overseas trip as leader of the Solomon Islands, newly elected Prime Minister Matthew Wale CBE squeezed in a visit to his old school, Christ’s College.

Welcomed by Headmaster Joe Eccleton and overjoyed to catch up with fellow 1987 1st XV teammates Mark Cox and Nick Ensor, Matthew toured the school, visited the College Museum, and met students and staff. A powerful haka from the 1st XV has delivered a memorable end to a special visit.

The surprise arrival of Mark and Nick proved to be a particular highlight, as the trio recalled their school days and endeavours on Upper. For the Flower’s House Old Boy, it was a “very emotional homecoming”.

First elected in a 2008 by-election, Matthew has led the Solomon Islands Democratic Party (SIDP) for more than a decade. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2025 for his service to politics, government, commerce, church, and community development.

During his visit to New Zealand, the Pacific leader was scheduled to have talks with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. New Zealand has a longstanding partnership with the Solomon Islands covering education, economic development, fisheries, and policing.
