Jon Parson – crafting a multi-role career
15 Apr 2026
Old Boy author and former Canterbury cricketer Jon Parson (6555) returned to Christ’s College for his 70 Years On Reunion in February.
On an earlier visit, Jon shared his book on renowned New Zealander Rewi Alley and recalled his time as a schoolboy cricketer in the provincial team. The 1960 Head of School House also visited one of his favourite spaces, the College Library, to donate a copy of his book, Rewi Alley – A Luminous Experience.
The right-arm fast-medium bowler played first-class cricket for both Canterbury and Wellington and was selected for the New Zealand U23 team. Jon also excelled in other sports during his time at College, sang in the choir for five years, and nurtured his passion for woodwork. Following a career in teaching, Jon set up Ethan Outdoor Furniture, creating a successful luxury brand.
Today, he continues his interest in his now second-generation family business and follows his love of learning about China through the New Zealand China Friendship Society. Both his brother, Thomas, and his father, Fred, also attended College.
