Even before Sam left College in 2006, his dedication to social causes was felt by others.

As the person who mobilised the Student Volunteer Army following the Christchurch earthquakes, he learnt and demonstrated first-hand how people can come together for good. In the years since, he’s gone on to develop non-profit and commercial ventures in international volunteerism, disaster risk reduction and social connection.

Currently, the Student Volunteer Army is still a main focus for Sam. Since the Covid-19 pandemic began, initiatives like SVA Grocery have been set up to give vulnerable members of society safe access to the essentials many of us take for granted.

“Christ’s College taught me to have confidence and believe in my own abilities. To know when to ask for help,” he says.

“Try to create a career out of something you are interested in. If you aren't sure, university is a great place to start!”
