There’s not much opportunity for surfing in Germany, so Vincent Stapelfeldt, 16, is making the most of the waves at Sumner.
“I go out there at the weekend and I love it,” says the Year 11 student from Hamburg who was a dayboy when he first joined Christ’s College in Term 3 in 2017.
With excellent English - having studied the language since elementary school - Vincent found the College experience to his liking and extended his stay for another six months in 2018, this time as a boarder in Flower’s House.
He finds the rules a little more strict and says the boarding house routines don’t allow much free time “but it’s really nice being with your mates.”
“Sometimes I can feel a bit homesick, but I skype a lot and that’s great.”
Christ’s College was recommended to his family in Hamburg by New Zealand friends whose own sons had attended.
“It’s a really different schooling experience to Germany where we have no school uniform, no laptops in schools and no school sports. If you want to play sport, you play for a club.”
Vincent enjoys playing football for College and his favourite subjects are Economics, PE and Spanish. He returns to Germany in July where he will complete his secondary schooling before studying law or business.
