Taking a chance on fun

15 Mar 2017

The boarding programme provides a range of activities to keep the boys occupied in their downtime. Most are publicised well in advance, but sometimes boarding programme coordinator and Flower’s Housemaster Andrew Levenger says it is good to inject some mystery into the mix and invite the boys to take a chance on fun.

On Sunday 12 March, 14 intrepid boarders jumped on the bus at 8.30am and set out on just such a trip, heading across the Canterbury Plains to destination unknown.

As the bus turned into the Adventure Trailrides headquarters in the Rubicon Valley, it soon became clear the boys had signed on for an epic off-road quad bike adventure – and despite dull and drizzly weather, nothing could dampen their excitement.

Kitted out in overalls and gumboots, revved up and ready to go, they ploughed through gushing streams, went hard up muddy embankments and fast down hill trails on a two-hour ride.

A stop at the well-known Sheffield Pie Shop, where the boys had their choice of two pies for lunch, finished an awesome outing on a tasty and sustaining note.

Mr Levenger says spaces on mystery trips are filled on a first come first served basis. He is already thinking about the next top secret expedition.
