Let them entertain you

18 Apr 2018

Held on Monday 9 and Thursday 12 April, House Music 2018 was, as ever, hugely popular – both for the participants and their friends and families who packed the Assembly Hall to enjoy the spectacle.

“Every year is different, and every year I’m amazed and surprised by what the boys are able to achieve,” says Director of Music Robert Aburn. “House Music is entirely student-led. It’s the boys’ night and an outstanding example of student collaboration, as the seniors in each House work with the juniors to create some very polished performances. There is a huge pool of musical talent at College and it’s fantastic in the lead-up to House Music to hear the boys rehearsing for the event.”

There are three categories in the competition: House Choir, House a cappella, and House instrumental. Every House has to enter a House Choir, but most also choose to participate in at least one of the other categories. House Music also provides an opportunity to feature other College musicians. On the first night the Big Band bookended the House performances, while College’s rock bands strutted their stuff on the second night.

With such a varied and entertaining programme, Adjudicator Connor Matthews certainly had his work cut out to decide the winners. He was full of praise for the incredible talent on show, which reflects College’s commitment to its wide-ranging choral, orchestral, contemporary, jazz and big band music programmes.
